I’ve had this machine since 2006, and I am in love with it. I live in a rental in NYC in a building without any laundry room. This means that prior to this machine, my husband and I had to gather our clothing, and walk 4 blocks to a public laundry mat. Not only is that inconvenient, but you’re sharing machines with absolute strangers is not that sanitary and this really hit home when we were doing laundry and a homeless man came to wash his clothing in the machine next to us.

First thing I have to say is, this machine is NOT for everyone. If I had the option of having a regular side by side washer and dryer, I would not have purchased/liked this machine. The machine is small enough to fit anywhere. I have it set up between the sink and refrigerator. Since it is small enough to fit just about anywhere, this means that your loads are going to be smaller as well. Personally I don’t have a problem with load size….instead of doing laundry once a week, I do laundry every other day or every two days during the week.

I think the first thing people need to understand about this machine is that it’s a trial and error process. When you first start using it you’ll have problems getting a load done as sometimes the machine is “unbalanced” and cannot spin. When that happened to me I used to stop the machine, and reload it to make sure that it was balanced (making sure to have some heavy items in the bottom, smaller items in between, a couple of more heavy items on the top). A normal cycle takes 58 minutes….my clothing comes out super clean. Sometimes when I am in a hurry I’ll do the “speed wash” cycle, which only takes 30 minutes.

Sure laundry takes a little longer because it’s an all in one unit, but I have NEVER had a load longer than 3 hours. This weekend I washed a complete queen size sheet set (fitted sheet, 2 pillow cases, and a sheet) and it took 2:30 hours from start to finish. Did it come out wrinkled??? Yes, but I personally don’t care since it’s my bedding. Was it dried when I pulled it out….YES!!! That I do care about. I read some of these reviews and I am amazed at the reasons people give it low rating (can’t wash another load while drying…really? you didn’t figure that one out before you brought it?) Is it a perfect machine…no, but for people without regular machine options I think it great.

Size of the loads….this is something else you have to play around with. When I first started using the machine, I had read that you should be careful with your load size, so I was making my loads really small. I just finished a load right now which included 8 shirts, 2 shorts, 1 long pajama pants, 3 underwear….the total time for this load, 2 hours (using speed wash, 30 minutes, and drying with timer set at 1:30 hour). My load was clean and dry. Taking your clothing out of the dryer is something else you have to get used to because the load will feel damp, but it’s not. All you have to do is shake the condensation out (and I really do mean shake. What I do is when I pull it out of the machine, I shake it and set that piece of clothing on the back of the dining room chair. By the time I am done pulling everything out, all the clothing is dry and ready to be folded and put away.

Vibrations/Shaking…the machine is fairly quiet. The only thing that make a loud noise is when it’s expelling water and even that is tolerable. I can watch tv in the other room and it doesn’t bother me. When the machine spins, it spins very fast (which helps with making sure your clothing is almost dry by the time the wash is done) but this means that there will be some vibration. My floor is wood, and you don’t really hear it. Now if I touch the counter or stove I can feel the vibration….but not hear it. My downstairs neighbor had never complained.

I’ve also read people complain about a musty smell inside the machine and I’ve never had an issue like that. I also make sure to take care of my machine. After I am done using it I let it cool off a bit (the time it take for me to put the clothing away). I take a piece of napkin and make sure to dry out the water that stays between the drum and rubber. After I am done with that, I do not close the machine but leave it open for a couple of hours. I also remove the detergent dispenser, rinse it, and leave it open as well so it dries out.

I have to admit that I have never cleaned out the inside of the machine for lint…but I plan to have my husband do it soon. I printed the instructions that I got from someone who reviewed the machine here. But even with all this time using it and not cleaning it properly, I really haven’t had an issue. I bet when I clean it out my drying time is going to take even less.

In conclusion, if you live in an apartment where regular laundry hook-up is not available and are tired of going to public laundry mats or sharing machines, you should really consider buying this washer/dryer unit. But do so with the idea that it does not work the same as a regular dryer and therefore you need to adjust the way you do laundry…..but the advantages of having your own machine in the apartment far outweighs any negatives this machine may have. I wish I could hug whoever invented this machine

I have owned my unit for close to 3 years now and the only issue with the machine was when I leave things in the pockets of my jeans. But other than that, I don’t overload it, I only dry when I don’t have time to air dry my clothing. I air dry to save energy and you have more time to do more loads as it does take a good deal of time to dry. I love it. I gave it 4 because of the drying time only. Other than that it’s a great item to have for an apartment, not a family machine as some reviews have stated. More for a max of 4 people.

Absolute, no-holds barred, incomparable, NIGHTMARE! I purchased this appliance about two years ago. Within the first six months (under a one-year warranty), it stopped drying. Service call. Rep doesn’t fix dryer and breaks it further so now it won’t even wash. Call new service company. After about four weeks of troubleshooting (I now know how Ed met his wife and takes his coffee), it finally gets repaired. A month later, it again stops drying. Service Call. Fixed. A month later, control board stops functioning. Service call. Replaced. A month later, it CATCHES ON FIRE. Service call. Fixed. It was about this time Ed the service tech suggested I contact LG about a replacement, as clearly this unit was defective. Unfortunately, I had such FAITH in a 00 LG appliance that every time Ed came to fix it, I believed it was FINALLY fixed.

Fast forward a couple more months: The one-year warranty has now expired (I BEG you to get the five year), the control board blows a SECOND time. The board, however, is under a two year warranty. I call Ed, and this time – he insists I call LG and get a replacement. It has had way too many repairs and was obviously a lemon.

So, I called. After many transfers to finally talk to someone I thought was the “correct person,” they asked that Ed fax over the work history and that I fax over my original purchase receipt. Within a couple of days Ed contacted me with a RETURN AUTHORIZATION NUMBER (w000t!!) LG had given him to give to me. I simply had to call to arrange the exchange. Well, I did call, and they said they could, indeed, begin the exchange process once they got a fax of my original purchase receipt (which they claim they did not receive the first time). I promptly faxed the receipt and waited for a reply, as per their instructions.

A few weeks passed (the Christmas holidays), and LG had not gotten back in touch like they assured me they would. To my dismay, when I called back in, I was told a “system upgrade” was done on their computer system and they no longer had ANY information on my account, the repairs, the return authorization number. NOTHING. So, I had to start over from the beginning, and – in the end – a decision was made that I could NOT make an exchange, that the repairs were NOT excessive, and my ONLY OPTION was to continue to have it serviced every 2-3 months. I gave up.

Now, the majority of the time, like now, it just sits, again broken, and unused. When purchasing this appliance (a ,500 appliance – in my life I’ve only paid more for my car and my house ), I did not know I would have to budget 0-400 every few months for ongoing service. Not to mention a month or so at the laundromat.

Saturday trusty Ed returned as now my dryer fan no longer works. He was a bit stumped and thought maybe the electrical harness needed to be replaced. When he called tech support, they actually had the audacity and ignorance to ask if he had “unplugged the unit and plugged it back in” to see if that would fix it. It was beyond insulting.

In all fairness, WHEN the machine works it does a fantastic job, and I truly wish I could recommend it. But, due to LG’s woeful customer service, I could never, ever recommend this or any LG appliance to anyone I know and still be able to sleep at night.

UPDATE: 6/11/10 ~ So, LG finally conceded that, wow, ya, maybe we have serviced the heck out of your unit to no avail, and we SHOULD replace it. My faith in LG and humanity was momentarily restored! However, a new unit was delivered Monday. By Tuesday morning (as in, the NEXT day), I discovered that, while the “timed” dry was working, the “sensor dry” was not. I just called (and of course they had very little information from previous calls). My solution? I give up. Replace immediately or just give me a refund. Their solution? “We’ll send a service tech.” Here we go again…stay tuned! Maybe it will catch on fire one more time!

I ordered this from an external website and that Sunday they were running a 10% everything sale so I paid less. (great start) I figured it would take like a week or two to deliver but it was here on Tuesday at 9am! The delivery guys even helped bring it into the room where it was to live, the kitchen. (very European) After a quick trip to the hardware store and about for two braided hoses and a splitter valve, the installation was simple.

If you’re considering buying a washer/dryer combo, this is the one to get. It’s the best one available in the U.S.

Worste Money I Ever Spent – Jordan Dubson –
I bought this unit to stop having to spend one night a week at the laundrymat. Given the extremely long times it takes to wash and dry a load and the condition the clothes come out in, the evening at the laundrymat was not such a sacrifice. I lived alone and couldn’t keep up with my laundry, now that my son lives with me forget about it. 2 loads a day minimum, when I can get the first load to finish in its normal time. If the machine can’t balance the load for the spin, it adds hours to the completion time. Would never buy this kind of unit again.

Well, now it won’t dry using a programmed cycle. It goes through the wash cycle, says it has 3:21 minutes left to dry and then rings the bells saying it is finished about 15 minutes later. The only thing I can do is set timed dry when I start it up but timed only goes 2:30 and it takes at least 3:20 to get things almost dry. I will say it again “Worst Money I Ever Spent”.
